While on a flight, the 50-year-old UNESCO engineer Walter Faber (Sam Shepard) encounters the brother of his college friend, Joachim Henke. Henke has married Faber's teenage sweetheart Hannah (Barbara Sukowa). Before he can visit him, though, Joachim commits suicide. Faber's life begins to totter. On a cruise to Europe, he meets the 20-year-old Sabeth (Julie Delpy). Completely fascinated with the young woman, he accompanies her and ultimately sleeps with her. When Sabeth has an accident, Faber discovers that his lover is his daughter ...Adapted from the famous novel by Max Frisch.
