Felix is the lucky guy who meets one astonishing woman after the other. But something is always missing. The kind of love Felix dreams of is hard to come by. Two women in Germany, two sisters, born in the years of war, grown up during the 'leaden times' of the fifties, commit themselves to the new times by joining the political movement of '68. They do it in very different ways and thereby end up as adversaries. While Juliane, the older of the two, applies herself pragmatically to make step-by-step changes as the editor of a women's magazine, Marianne joins the political underground to achieve these goals. Years later, when Marianne gets caught and imprisoned, the emotional bond between the sisters is renewed by Juliane's frequent visits of Marianne in prison. THE PROMISE begins in East Berlin in 1961, shortly after the building of the wall. Sophie and Konrad are planning to escape into the West together, burrowing under the city through the sewers. Sophie makes it but Konrad, spotted by an army truck, stays behind. From this moment, the lives of the two lovers are changed forever. In almost thirty years, Sophie and Konrad are to see each other only four times. The first is in Prague, where Konrad, now an astrophysicist, is sent to make a presentation at a scientific conference. reunited, the lovers discover that nothing has changed between them and Sophie is delighted to discover that she is pregnant. She is afraid of people and seeks refuge in museums where she copies the paintings of the Great Masters - in black and white. Both of these very different women meet up with each other, get to know each other and become friends. The two sisters, Maria and Anna, have been dependent on each other from early childhood and Maria, an efficient top secretary, pays for her sister's university education. But Maria is the more dominant character and gradually she drives Anna, a shy sensitive girl and one unable to adjust to the pressures of a competitive society, into suicide. Maria suppresses both her grief and her feeling of guilt. She is convinced that no human being is irreplaceable and so she adopts Miriam, a lively young typist from her office. She gives her board and lodging and sponsors her language lessons. The domestic pattern is re-established and gradually Maria tries to push her companion into the role vacated by her sister.
